In the 21st Century we really do now know some profound things about what children need and what they do NOT need. People still cling on to the ‘EVERY CHILD IS DIFFERENT’. Of course they are, BUT, there are several simple truths we know now about what EVERY CHILD NEEDS which are irrefutable.

These truths come from the last 25 years of scientific research which has enabled scientists to look inside of live, functioning brains. Previously proof had been constructed on dissecting dead brains and from research using animals. All of which evidenced and educated us to a degree but now we have so much more we MUST use it and stop ignoring it. The fact is that in the 21st century children are more stressed and distressed that ever before, and no one wants that.

The United Nations findings on what is being done to children in the UK, which I suspect are not vastly dissimilar to the USA, are a damning indictment to say the least. Reported in Children & Young People Now, they are shaming and disturbing, and as I previously said, come at at time when we do know what children need!

“The United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child has highlighted a raft of “serious concerns” about the government’s treatment of vulnerable and disadvantaged children.”

To thrive EVERY child needs these basics from the adults in their lives, at home, in early years, at school and in the community:

  • One adult they can form a safe, emotionally connected relationship with
  • Physical and emotional safety
  • Stability in daily life – not multiple moves for children in care
  • Adults who treat them with respect and kindness
  • To be loved and cared for in an unconditional way

To develop good mental and physical health and access learning EVERY child does NOT NEED:

  • To be threatened with physical or emotional harm – punishments and consequences
  • To be shamed and criticized
  • To feel they have to please adults to get emotional connection and kindness
  • To fear being left, moved or without a safe person
  • To live with prolonged unpredictability
  • To be surrounded by emotionally absent adults who don’t ‘see’ their emotional needs
  • Harsh words or actions against them.

There is so much more too, but if we could all get these established for each and every child we would hugely reduce their mental illnesses, such as anxiety and depression. We would also offer better physical health outcomes as obesity would decline, along with asthma, eczema, diabetes, constipation, food intolerance and many other conditions crippling our children.

With all of this addressed our children would experience more curiosity and sheer joy in their daily life and relationships. They would be free to learn and to form healthy and lasting relationships which would improve their daily and future lives immeasurably, and then those of their children.

“There is no mystery as to what is wrong for our children

The only mystery lies in why we are not all doing it?”

What ARE we waiting for??
