Why should we ask a baby for their permission to change their nappy or diaper?

There has been a big backlash from an interview with expert, Deanne Carson who, “…suggested parents ask their infants questions such as: ‘I’m going to change your nappy now, is that okay?”

But if you leave a space and wait for body language and wait to make eye contact then you are letting that child know that their response matters..”

Carson’s interest is in teaching consent and body safety early on. I fully endorse what she says and urge everyone present in any way in Baby and children’s lives to get hold of Jayneen Sanders fabulous, common sense guide. 

Together we can give every baby and child simple protective messages as part of daily life. Otherwise we fail to safeguard them as fully as we could which we could later deeply regret. 

It’s simple. It’s safe. It makes sense.
