Is it time to tidy out your ‘anxiety draw’?

Is it time to tidy out your ‘anxiety draw’? 150 150 Jane Evans

At home or at work most of us have that draw!

It’s the one we just shove everything and anything into that might come in useful. Over time it gets messier and messier and finding anything in it becomes a real challenge. It often stresses us out and irritates us so we cope by:

  1. Keeping it shut
  2. Having an occasional frustrating rummage around in it
  3. Starting to tidy it then getting overwhelmed

It can be all too easy to treat our anxiety in a similar way to that draw by:

  1. Ignoring or minimising it
  2. Jumping from one anti-anxiety busting fad to another
  3. Getting overwhelmed by reading and watching EVERYTHING on ways to overcome anxiety

Ignoring or minimising

Because of my TV and radio and speaking appearances on understanding and addressing anxiety. My TED Talk, Taming and Tending Your Meerkat Brain, and my children’s book, Little Meerkat’s big Panic, I’m often contacted by people who think they or their children MAY be anxious. This can lead to me describing some of the signs and behaviours of ongoing anxiety, which is often met by a pause. I’m often then told, “Oh it’s not that bad.” So, the draw stays full, messy and well and truly shut!

Jumping from one anti-anxiety busting fad to another

Part of my wellness and resilience learning has brought me into contact with others on a similar journey. Interestingly some of them seem to dive feet first into the latest calmness craze embracing new practices and potions as they go, then moving on to the next big thing.

Just like rummaging around in the untidy, over-filled draw, this isn’t always very effective. As when we jump from one thing to another it can create more anxiety. Better to master some simple, do-able practices and to turn them into lifelong wellness habits.

Becoming overwhelmed by too much!

Just as repeatedly staring at the chaos and sheer amount of stuff in the draw can feel overwhelming. So, can finding out where and how to start, when it comes to feeling less anxious. After all, how do you stop your:

  • heart from randomly racing day and night
  • stomach from flipping out, filling with gas and making mealtimes a nightmare
  • skin from getting hot, itching and prickling with heat and flushes
  • brain from filling up with endless chatter about potential threats and imagined what ifs and failures

That’s why I’m offering you the opportunity to step into 2018 better equipped to boost your daily wellness and to increase your resilience for life’s ups and downs.
