Yet like lemmings off a cliff every year, especially in January and around April/May, we jump off the cliff right back onto the diet merry-go round wreck again. Believing this one WILL WORK. This time we will get to the size, weight, fitness and even shape we can feel happy at. (Although this is as mythical as f*@king unicorns)
Handily there is a new diet kid on the block, this time it’s the Fast 800 Plan to go with the:
Atkins Diet
Slimming World
Weight Watchers
5:2 Diet Juice Fasting
Keto Diet
Cambridge thingy
Slimfast sh*te
What the hell do I know?
I speak as someone who was obsessed in an deeply unhealthy way with my weight and body shape and image for over 30 years. Having finally gone through the right looking-glass or back of the right wardrobe, I am now in my only ever dreamed of magical land of see-food, eat-food, stay the same weight give or take a pound or two! I’m a healthy size 12 and weigh around 9lbs 6oz, having been size 16 at times and size 6 at others.
Far, far more importantly I no longer give a flying f%@k about how much I weigh or what my body looks like because I have a great relationship with it and am eternally grateful it stuck with me through the terrible starve-binge, berate, bully, punish cycle that was my life. Most of the time I eat healthily because I like it but nothing is off limits as now I easily ping back to all the stuff we are supposed to eat. I do enjoy a drink or two but also can manage it without breaking into a sweat these days.
In your lifetime how much more money will you throw at diets?
Before you convince yourself otherwise and jump into yet another dose of misery for the next few weeks, or months. Let’s be crystal clear that weight loss is a multi-billion dollar industry that promises much and for far too many of us, delivers very little in terms of lasting changes.
According to Stratistics MRC, the Global Weight Loss and Weight Management Market is accounted from $168.95 billion in 2016 to reach $278.95 billion by 2023 with a CAGR of 7.4%. Factors such as growing number of bariatric surgeries and rising incidence of lifestyle diseases are fueling the market growth.
Of course when we follow the plans for the most part they do work. Weight does come off and if we have the energy to exercise too, then our body shape changes. But it will mean being on them forever as the body is designed to store resources especially if it thinks it’s had a period of food restriction. This is an ancient response based on when food WAS scarce, unlike now where its mostly only a click, a call or a car ride away from us 24/7. So when we stop we will crave things even more strongly and boom back to square one or even square minus one!
A healthy weight is a very good thing
Of course we all know that obesity is a very real health hazard on so many levels and keeping to recommended weights is a serious consideration to avoid so many limiting conditions. Eating plans can provide some amazingly useful informations and guides to follow which will be a good thing to educate us along the way.
Information by the NHS (National Health Service) shows us why we should seriously think about what we eat and drink as of course it has health implications.
Day-to-day problems related to obesity include:
- breathlessness
- increased sweating
- snoring
- difficulty doing physical activity
- often feeling very tired
- joint and back pain
- low confidence and self-esteem
- feeling isolated
Being obese can also increase your risk of developing many potentially serious health conditions, including:
- type 2 diabetes
- high blood pressure
- high cholesterol and atherosclerosis (where fatty deposits narrow your arteries), which can lead to coronary heart disease and stroke
- asthma
- metabolic syndrome (a combination of diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity)
- several types of cancer, including bowel cancer, breast cancer and womb cancer
- gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) (where stomach acid leaks out of the stomach and into the gullet)
- gallstones
- reduced fertility
- osteoarthritis (a condition involving pain and stiffness in your joints)
- sleep apnoea (a condition that causes interrupted breathing during sleep, which can lead to daytime sleepiness with an increased risk of road traffic accidents, as well as a greater risk of diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease)
- liver disease and kidney disease
- pregnancy complications, such as gestational diabetes or pre-eclampsia (when a woman experiences a potentially dangerous rise in blood pressure during pregnancy)
Obesity reduces life expectancy by an average of 3 to 10 years, depending on how severe it is.
It’s estimated that obesity and being overweight contribute to at least 1 in every 13 deaths in Europe.
OK smarty pants what can we do?
Honestly from the magical land of see-food eat-food stay a healthy size, I am 100,000% sure that we first have to remove all the unhelpful, sabotaging life-long thinking which otherwise always cause us to slip back again. This must be done at a subconscious level and for a lasting effect, I only know of one technique which is what I use with all my Clients, and for myself. (See below)
Diets, plans and all of the rest rely on using the conscious clever mind. Yes the system makes sense. Yes I am buying it. Yes I get what I need to do. Yes I have recipes. Yes I understand the motivational videos. Yes I can do that exercise. Your wonderful conscious mind will be FULL of YES’S at this point as it all makes sense, hell you even feel hopeful and a bit excited!
Great…except your subconscious mind is much, much more powerful. It has been the life long holder of all of your emotional responses and therefore drivers when it comes to eating, food and exercise. Too often food was a comfort when we celebrated, felt miserable, stressed, overwhelmed, not good enough and scared. Alcohol too, and sugary fizzy drinks will also have helped to numb out our feelings, easily and well on a temporary basis.
We do absolutely know that there is nothing conscious and logical about eating a whole packet of biscuits, ordering a large Mac, having chips 3 times a week, eating snacks before dinner. But, our subconscious mind can be full of the best emotional reasons EVERrrrrrrrr as to why we definitely should.
